Fire and Explosion Investigations

The French Camp McKinley Fire District employs highly trained personnel to investigate the origin, cause, and circumstances of fires and explosions that occur in the French Camp and Mountain House communities.  Investigators focus on major or unusual fires, high dollar-loss incidents, fires resulting in serious bodily injury or death, suspected intentionally-set fires, and explosions.

District investigators have peace officer powers pursuant to California 830.37 PC and may arrest suspects, write and serve search warrants, and carry a firearm in performance of their duties.  French Camp Fire investigators work closely with the San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office to investigate fire-related criminal acts, including arson, in the District.

District investigators also maintain membership in the San Joaquin County Joint Fire Investigation Unit.  Along with fire personnel from other agencies in San Joaquin County, the FIU consists of members from the San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office, the San Joaquin County District Attorney's Office, and the ATF, and allows French Camp Fire investigators to assist with investigating incidents throughout the county.

What is Arson?

Arson is a serious crime in which somebody willfully and maliciously sets fire to, burns, or causes to be burned, or who aids, counsels, or procures the burning of, any structure, forest land, or property.

National Arson Awareness Week is recognized every May, during which the United States Fire Administration highlights arson prevention across the United States.
